Voices Carry, Wicked Game, & Ordinary World
We’ve crafted a three-song series of fully licensed cover songs as Quicksilver Night in 2024, all of them featuring the enchanting vocals of the Russian-born UK artist Dikajee. The original versions of these songs have lyrical depths that might be obscured by slick production and glossed over by time and familiarity with them but they are great songs and we’ve been having a lot of fun doing them. I’ve stuck quite close to the original musical arrangements, with minor variations, and Dikajee handled the vocal arrangements herself.
Released July 7th (7/7), our cover of “Voices Carry” also features saxophonist Jeff Saunders. The original version of ‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” was released as a single in North America in March 1985, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Sometimes belied by its sonic underpinnings, it is a song about emotional abuse and control.

Released August 8th (8/8), our cover of “Wicked Game” adds a few subtle touches of vibraphone and synthesizer in comparison to the original version; I felt that these additions accentuated the hypnotically flowing feeling of the song. Per Wikipedia, “Wicked Game” was released as a single in July 1989 and later became a sleeper hit after being featured in the 1990 film “Wild at Heart”, starring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern. “Wicked Game” became an American top 10 hit in January 1991, eventually reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100.

Released October 10th (10/10), our cover of Duran Duran’s haunting and poetic “Ordinary World” is a surreal sonic setting for Dikajee’s evocative and enchanting voice. Per Wikipedia, Duran Duran singer Simon Lebon described the lyrics of “Ordinary World” as “trying to get over the death of a best friend” and further stated that putting that into words freed him emotionally and mentally. We adhered pretty closely to the amazing original version except for some additional orchestral elements such as piano with layered strings and harmonized guitars. We at Quicksilver Night hope we have done justice to this transcendent musical work.
